IHRIM’s HR Metrics & Workforce Analytics Basics

 

This course is designed for individuals that are new to data analysis, HR metrics or both.  This full day program begins with an overview of the field of HR Metrics and Workforce Analytics and provides training in practice in fundamental data analytic techniques, data interpretation, and the fundamentals of presenting and reporting data to decision makers.  This is IHRIM’s newest course offering and will be a popular one, so register early!  Space is limited. 

Attendees will Learn:

  • The purpose for conducting HR Metrics and Analytics in organizations is to improve decision making and how to develop HR metrics and analytics systems with that purpose in mind
  • How to conduct basic statistical analyses to report the current conditions and trends in your organization
  • Key metrics that can be used to evaluate the staffing levels (e.g., head count versus plan, bench strength, turnover), staffing and development effectiveness (e.g., quality of applicants attracted, offer acceptance, regret turnover, employee performance, training effectiveness)
  • Data reporting techniques that allow you to communicate intended messages to target audiences most effectively.

  1. Introduction to HR Metrics and Workforce Analytics past and present
  2. The reason for conducting HR Metrics and Workforce Analytics is to improve decision-making—nothing more nothing less.
  3. Basic data analytic techniques using EXCEL—what are they, how do we do them, and why do we use them?
  4. HR Metrics—common and not so common metrics for evaluating the effectiveness of human capital in organizations
  5. Workforce Analytics—putting HR metrics and data analysis to work.
  6. Reporting Keys—data reporting techniques to get the intended messages to decision makers when they need them in ways they will understand

About the Instructor

Dr. Kevin D. Carlson
Associate Professor of Management
Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University


Kevin Carlson is an Associate Professor of Management in the Pamplin College of Business at Virginia Tech and teaches courses in Human Resource Management, Productivity and Quality Improvement and Applied Human Resource Information Systems. His research interests include knowledge and its role in decision-making, the evaluation of staffing effectiveness, and the use of human resource information systems to improve organization function. His work has been published in the Journal of Applied Psychology, Personnel Psychology, Journal of Management, Personnel Review and the IHRIM Journal and he has presented at the annual meetings of the Academy of Management, Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology and IHRIM. He is current a member of IHRIM’s Board of Directors and was a founding director of IHRIM’s HR Metrics and Workforce Analytics Affinity Group.

About the Instructor

Barbara Von Bergen

Barbara is an independent consultant experienced in all aspects of human resource systems from development of requirements through system selection, implementation, training, post implementation and maintenance. She has worked with a number of HRMS applications as a consultant and as a practitioner. She has significant hands-on experience in managing functional human resource areas including systems, recruitment, compensation, benefits, employee communication, training and development.

Barbara helped develop several IHRIM educational courses including “Managing HRMS: Post-Implementation Issues”, “Fundamentals of HR Information Management”, “Essentials for Successful Project Management”, “Successful HR Systems Selection”. She has taught a number of the offerings of these courses.
