News from OHUG

Spotlight on New Board Member Zain Farooqi

Zain Farooqi recently joined the OHUG Board of Directors to serve as the voice for the Taleo community and assist with setting the strategy and goals for the HCM community.

We caught up with Zain to ask him a couple questions about himself and the role of Taleo within OHUG in hopes to gain some insight on his volunteer position on the OHUG board.

Q: Where do you work/what do you do?

A: I work at Marriott International, which is located in Bethesda, Md. In my current role as the director of talent acquisition systems, I oversee global talent acquisition and screening systems and provide consultative leadership in the evaluation, integration, development and implementation of global talent acquisition system solutions.

Q: Is there anything particular you are currently working on that excites you?

A: Searching for creative ways to accomplish goals and overcome business challenges is exciting every day. Marriott International, with its diverse and complex processes across its 19 brands in 72 countries, allows me to do just that. We recently launched a mobile apply solution (to search and apply for jobs) globally in 10 languages, which was a very exciting project.

Q: How long have you been involved with OHUG?

A: I have worked with Taleo since 2008 and with OHUG since 2012.

Q: Why is it important for Taleo to be represented on the OHUG board?

A: Taleo has a very strong user community. It benefits almost every organization in some fashion that uses Taleo. Prior to being acquired by Oracle, Taleo did a great job supporting the user community and helping it develop. Being represented on the OHUG board will allow the community to remain intact, its interests represented, and continue to grow.

We know how great the OHUG Global Conference is, but don't just take our word for it.

Greg Brigman, HRIS manager at Sonoco, has been to a handful of OHUG conferences. "OHUG has consistently helped Sonoco learn great things while attending the conference," he said.

"Since 2008, we have built an HR portal from ideas found at OHUG. We have become a member of the PeopleSoft Customer Advisory through direct networking at OHUG. We are now venturing down the path everyone seems to be taking to look at Oracle Cloud. I know OHUG can help us make the right decision as we research this path."

Oracle Will Allow Customers to Swap On-Premises Software for Cloud Services
IDG News Service (05/01/14) Kanaracus, Chris

Oracle announced that it will allow its customers to swap on-premises software subscriptions for software-as-a-service apps. The Customer 2 Cloud program permits clients employing Oracle's on-premises human capital management and customer relationship management software to migrate to cloud versions, and eligible users include E-Business Suite, Siebel, PeopleSoft, and JD Edwards EnterpriseOne customers. In addition, Customer 2 Cloud incorporates Oracle's Cloud Express rapid implementation services, while hybrid on-premises/cloud apps also are available. Oracle says the program offers customers "a practical path for extending their on-premise applications with high value cloud applications, versus wholesale replacements." Constellation Research chairman Ray Wang sees the program as benefiting customers, as "many...need a defined methodology to go from on-premises to cloud. Basically, the feedback from customers not in the cloud was, how do we get there most easily?" Constellation analyst Holger Mueller also sees Customer 2 Cloud as supplying "a fast way to [turn] shelfware into cloudware." He says it is a good move for Oracle. "It's a proactive way to get more customers live [in the cloud]" while skipping long sales cycles that have indeterminate outcomes, Mueller notes.

Changing the Dynamics of Learning and Benefiting From an IT-Savvy Workforce
The Nation (Thailand) (05/06/14) Han, Shaun

Companies require intelligent operation to stay competitive, and a recent Oracle white paper says although a majority of human resources professionals know a learning culture is critical to the organization's health, few know the reason why, or what it means to have a learning culture, writes Oracle's Shaun Han. A learning culture is a foundational series of organizational values, principles, processes, and practices that encourage individuals and the organization to gain knowledge, competence, and performance. Employees learn more effectively via a problem-solving methodology innate to dynamic work processes. High-impact learning organizations (HILOs) can foster skills and talent with greater proficiency through their adoption of the new learning concept. HILOs that have implemented such a robust learning platform tend to significantly overtake their peers in terms of market share, employee productivity, delivery of quality products, and response to customer needs. Han says Asian organizations ought to consider establishing high-impact constructivist learning programs where IT plays a significant role to bolster knowledge acquisition and leadership and skills development. The first stage in engaging a workforce is knowing them better, and technology solutions encourage this by capturing and managing a profile of each employee. The organization can then develop and deliver a highly configurable learning experience that mirrors organizational culture, and that addresses the learning needs of organizations across the entire employment cycle. The final stage involves aligning the learning culture with the business strategy.

Three Tips for Getting the Cloud You Want—on Your Own Terms
Forbes (05/08/14) Erickson, Jeff

Oracle's Rod Johnson attributes the migration toward cloud-based technologies to a basic divergence between how rapidly industries change and IT's response rate to those changes. “We have found that the gap between business change and IT response has been growing, to the point where there’s now about an 18-month lag time between when a business unit needs something and when IT can respond,” he notes. Oracle's Jeff Erickson offers strategies to help technologists influence the adoption of cloud solutions, starting with CIOs functioning as cloud ambassadors and handling relationships between third-party vendors of software as a service and existing on-premises solutions. IT response rates are often depressed because hidden or shadow IT spending only worsens cloud migration challenges. Johnson says finding ways to modernize within the system itself is critical, and technology partners are obliged to evolve the customer experience in service of this objective. For example, Oracle's Customer 2 Cloud program helps customers shift their investment ratio within certain Oracle application families by refocusing components of their installed on-premises solutions to Oracle application cloud services within the same family. The program is open to all existing Oracle customers of CRM and HCM solutions in Oracle E-Business Suite and Oracle’s Siebel, PeopleSoft, and JD Edwards product lines to help them adopt the capabilities within Oracle Customer Experience Cloud and Oracle Human Capital Management Cloud.

An Exercise in Trendspotting
Human Resource Executive (05/08/14) Boese, Steve

Human Resource Executive HR Technology Conference co-chair Steve Boese outlines several important and transformational trends that can be inferred from this year's HR Tech speaking proposals. One trend he notes is the growing prominence of applying data to HR and people management, which has reached unprecedented heights. The conference will air the views of HR and recruiting leaders on how this trend is manifesting itself in many HR and talent management processes, as evidenced by the growing use of predictive assessments in the candidate screening process, more refined algorithms to find better matches between jobs and people, and the use of data on hours worked and compensation to inform Affordable Care Act compliance awareness and strategy. A second trend Boese cites is the advent of a new marketing emphasis for C-suite collaboration. "With the increased competition for specialized and in-demand talent, especially as the U.S. economy continues to rebound from recession, HR and recruiting leaders have to be ever-more concerned with branding, messaging, engagement, and image," he says. A third trend Boese observes is the abundance of choice of modern HR technologies, which means companies of all sizes can avail themselves of powerful HR solutions. "For many organizations, even small and medium-sized, the need to drive competitive advantage through people is propelling investment of time and resources toward more modern and innovative HR technologies," he points out.

Product of the Month: Oracle HCM Cloud 8
SearchFinancialApplications (04/24/14) Snider, Emma

Oracle's Human Capital Management Cloud release 8 includes more than 200 new features to further enhance the Oracle HCM platform, which integrates Fusion core human resources and Taleo talent management modules to offer a cloud-based HCM suite that supports large, global implementations. Release 8's features support social sourcing, time and attendance, workforce modeling, performance management, and succession planning. They also offer support for Canada, and the expansion of mobile capabilities to manage additional processes and provide more analytics. "It's highly functional, easy to use and built in such a way that it is highly likely to make an everyday user [like a manager] happy using it," says Constellation Research analyst Holger Mueller. The updated release includes a new user interface, and the platform's support for the iPad has drawn praise. "I travel quite a bit, and now that I have access to this application on the iPad, I can handle the executive referral issues that come up from an airport or a hotel," says Cengage Learning's David Muller. "It has added efficiencies to the most challenging and time-consuming escalation issues I get. In terms of quick access [and] routing, it has far exceeded my expectations."

Low Confidence in HR's Ability to Support Organizations: Survey
Canadian HR Reporter (04/25/14)

Although human resources and non-HR executives acknowledge the need for action on critical organizational issues such as leadership, employee retention and engagement, and workforce capability, many are uncertain about their level of preparation, according to Deloitte's 2014 Human Capital Trends survey. In addition, more than 50 percent of respondents assessed their HR and talent teams' current performance to be less than good. "The greatest challenge for the human capital management profession is how to manage a rapidly globalizing workforce, while at the same time keeping pace with shifting demographics and ever-evolving technology," says Deloitte's Heather Stockton. The survey identified key challenges for business and HR leaders, with leadership cited as the biggest and most urgent challenge. Thirty-eight percent of respondents perceive their talent programs as having less-than-adequate ability to cultivate existing and future talent, while 73 percent of HR leaders describe their ability to exploit emerging tools and approaches as weak. The second major challenge is holding on to and engaging workers in light of evolving employee expectations, and 25 percent of HR professionals and their non-HR peers say they are not ready
