Oracle Updates HCM Cloud With Help Desk App, Offline Mobile Support
    ZDNet (04/06/16) Gagliordi, Natalie

Oracle announced updates to its Human Capital Management (HCM) Cloud at the Oracle HCM World event, including the addition of a help desk application that gives human resources managers greater visibility into the workforce and employees a more user-friendly portal for accessing HR resources. The Oracle HR Help Desk app boasts full-case management and escalation capabilities for complex issue resolution, and has the same workflows, analytics, social capabilities and user interface as the HCM Cloud. Employees can seek volunteer opportunities in the My Volunteering portal included in the HCM Cloud. Oracle also enhanced its Oracle Learning Cloud with new features. The platform promises to deliver contextual and social learning functions, educating users in real time with tailored recommendations according to job types and skills. The enhancements include new capabilities enabling the embedding of learning content within the context of business processes. Oracle Learning Cloud also features an offline mobile app to facilitate training activities in the absence of Internet or broadband connectivity. "With the latest additions to Oracle HCM Cloud, Oracle continues to help organizations drive digital transformation by creating highly effective and modern HR departments," said Oracle HCM Development's Chris Leone. How the 'Gig Economy' Offers Flexibility for Employers and Employees
    Personnel Today (03/31/16) Campbell, Andy

Freelancing is becoming an appealing option in the modern workforce, and "the traditional view of a job for life died years ago, and it is likely that the 'portfolio career' will become increasingly popular, if not the norm," according to Andy Campbell, Oracle UK's Senior Director of Human Capital Management Strategy. He noted the emergence of this trend creates an imperative for organizations to apply some of the lessons of the "gig economy" in managing their permanent employees. "There is, of course, a time to use contract workers, but businesses should first look at the skills within their own organization, as many employees possess skills that go beyond their daily role and they are keen to put them into practice," Campbell said. He cited Oracle research indicating 34 percent of workers find working on exciting projects to be most important to their sense of engagement. Forty-three percent of employers surveyed said this practice was most critical to engaging the people in their organization. Moreover, 47 percent of employee respondents said they would like the option of assuming a new job role within their company but are unable to. Opening up project-based roles to full-time employees calls for a subtler strategy for human resources planning, according to Campbell. He said this may require changes to the company's existing systems, structures and ways of working.

Golden Age of HR Predictive Analytics on Horizon, Report Says
    SearchFinancialApplications (03/10/16) Ring, Dan

Organizations are entering a "golden age" of human resources predictive analytics, and progress could ramp up in several areas, including talent recruitment/retention and employee scheduling of workers, according to a worldwide study of business and HR leaders by Deloitte. The report cited the advent of analytics as one of the top 10 HR trends, and this year should witness significant progress in terms of capabilities. "We are seeing tremendous growth," noted Bersin by Deloitte founder Josh Bersin. "Many companies have taken HR software and put it on the cloud, so they have better access to data. They also have analytics teams. Being an HR analytics person is now kind of a cool job." The percentage of companies that are fully able to use HR predictive analytics increased year-over-year from 4 percent to 8 percent, while the number of companies ready, or somewhat ready, for analytics rose from 24 percent to 32 percent. Moreover, Deloitte found HR leaders are cultivating stronger skills, becoming more innovative and more often teaming with business leaders to help enhance profits. The report also found organizations are using HR predictive analytics to spot the risk of top talent quitting and prescribe ways to retain them, develop profiles of top salespeople, localize the traits of the most productive employees, reduce bad hires and find patterns of unplanned absences.

What Is Digital HR All About and How Is It Changing How We Work and Live?
    Anthill Magazine (04/01/16) Green, Aaron

The growing interconnection of work and life has made human resources management the most pressing challenge in the enterprise, and it faces a formidable task ahead with looming skills and internal capability shortages, according to Aaron Green, vice president of HCM, Oracle APAC. Green said organizations must enable digital HR if they are to survive, and it goes beyond process automation and digitization. Digital HR serves as the platform for organizational transformation to prepare it for the future, taking advantage of new-age sciences to embed intuitiveness within HR transactions and decisions to facilitate organizational efficacy. Digital HR can drive workforce engagement by establishing HR transactions that are manageable from "always on, always available" mobile-enabled devices. In addition, digital HR can effect cultural transformation in the contemporary digital workplace, and support much higher empowerment and transparency by enabling the transfer of various processes to managers and employees. Moreover, organizations stand a better chance of drawing and retaining higher-quality talent when they can deliver an employee value proposition via digital channels. In addition, the smooth combination of real-time employee data, inbuilt analytical capabilities and referencing to big data enables digital HR solutions to supply meaningful insights. Finally, digital HR can boost the HR department's strategic value to the rest of the organization.

Cloud HRM for a Digital Workforce
    CXOtoday.com (03/22/16)

In an interview, Oracle's Shailesh Singhla discussed the helpful effect cloud-based human capital management (HCM) solutions are having on human resources teams' talent management and retention efforts. "The upgrade cycle for cloud-based HCM is much faster than that of traditional on-premises software, so companies must be able to embrace change in order to take full advantage of the new features," Singhla noted. He stressed a need for HR and business leaders to engage with millennials and digital natives by simplifying the employee experience and facilitating connections anywhere via any device, tailoring information and communicating it in a way that is relevant for their job and supporting a culture that encourages workers to share their knowledge and engage with each other. "Oracle has recently launched the Oracle Learning Cloud to help shift the corporate learning paradigm to one that enables employees at all levels to learn contextually and socially regardless of their location," Singhla said. "The new Oracle solution helps companies provide employees with a consumer-like experience to help retain and develop the talent they need to be successful." Singhla noted the Oracle HCM solution stands apart by offering a comprehensive and end-to-end employee experience. He also said it "displays the conversations in the application platform [user interface] shell that are contextually related to the business process or business object being manipulated in the application."

    The Big Issues Facing HR
    HR Magazine (03/16) Vol. 61, No. 2, P. 58 Schramm, Jen

The Society for Human Resource Management's Special Expertise Panels anticipate tighter labor markets, economic uncertainty and globalization will influence the workplace and the HR profession in the years ahead. Organizations are finding it tougher to attract top talent due to improving labor market conditions, making it imperative that HR help build a strong employer brand. Smart HR professionals are emphasizing cultures that incorporate the basics of a great place to work, including corporate social responsibility initiatives, robust worker safety and security measures and an overarching ambiance of civility and respect in the workplace. Another trend is the increasing use of new technology to improve productivity and workforce flexibility, which also is supporting a virtual workforce that adds challenges to employee management and team building. The combined threat of data breaches or risks to global supply chains and physical safety concerns for employees is contributing to a growing sense of insecurity, while hiring strategies and other HR decisions will be shaped by economic pressures. Moreover, changes in demographics, including an aging workforce, multiple generations working together and greater cultural diversity will have a mounting impact on many HR practices. Finally, HR practitioners are confronted with both opportunities and challenges inherent in big data, with business leaders pushing HR professionals to use metrics and in-depth analysis to make good decisions and show the return on investment of major expenditures.
